CKA Charlama is an independent art platform dedicated to contemporary production and the archiving of historical artistic practices.
The institution
CKA Charlama is an independent art platform based in Sarajevo, focused on contemporary production and the archiving of historical artistic practices. We have been active since 2009 through Charlama Depot at the KSC Skenderija complex, a gallery space that operates as a site of production, research, and exhibition. The platform develops projects that simultaneously generate new artworks and critically engage with the legacy of contemporary art. The archive is treated as an active component of the program, through which key moments and figures of the local and regional art scene are reinterpreted. Within this framework, the SubDokumenta Sarajevo Biennial of Visual Arts is developed, establishing continuity with the legacy of YU Dokumenta and contemporary practices. Through international collaborations and networking, Charlama builds a sustainable platform for the exchange and visibility of artistic ideas on both local and global horizons.
CKA Charlama is led by Jusuf Hadžifejzović, Artistic Director, and Jasmin Duraković, President of the Association. Hadžifejzović is a key figure of the contemporary art scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region—a visual artist and curator known for his long-standing work in developing independent art platforms and international exhibition projects, including the legacy of YU Dokumenta. Duraković is an acclaimed film director and producer, with a strong professional interest in the broader field of visual arts.
Gallery Charlama Depot
Charlama Depot Gallery is the central space of CKA Charlama at KSC Skenderija in Sarajevo, conceived as a site for production, exhibition, and research in contemporary art. Its program focuses on the development of artistic and curatorial projects, with a particular emphasis on process-based work and contemporary artistic practices. At the same time, the gallery develops an archival dimension through the documentation and reinterpretation of key artistic events and the legacy of YU Dokumenta.
Through collaborations on both local and international levels, Charlama Depot operates as a dynamic space for the exchange and visibility of artistic ideas.
SubDokumenta Sarajevo, our international biennial, is a core part of our programme — a platform for global dialogue on contemporary art and its role in society.
